How to deal with negative people at work

Dealing with negative people at work

Every workplace has a unique personality, some of which are overwhelmingly uplifting while others are shockingly unpleasant. A negative coworker is like a faulty cell that quickly infects others, lowering morale and productivity.

Having  negative people on your team affects not only them but also the rest of the team.

Negativity spreads quickly

According to psychologists, habits and attitudes can be passed on from one person to the next. This is especially true when people work together in groups. Duke University professor Hemant Kakkar refers to it as “social contagion.” When you have someone on your team who is constantly moaning, you will quickly notice how negative they are. You may even “discover” that you’ve been doing more work than you’re being compensated for.

Pessimists can be annoying

Some coworkers will reveal everything that is wrong with their lives whenever the occasion arises. You may be sure that no work will be done if such a coworker visits your desk. They will go on and on with their rant until they have exhausted themselves. In the meantime, you’ll become disengaged from your task and miss deadlines.

Do you have a team member that is disillusioned? That’s an additional issue.

At work, teams get together to develop solutions. However, when a member of your team is dissatisfied for whatever reason, you and your team have still another difficulty to solve. As you try to keep the squad ship afloat, you’ll have to deal with a lack of motivation and lethargy on a regular basis.

They just draw attention to problems

A dissatisfied person sees nothing positive in their coworkers, employers, clients, or even themselves. They just talk about the negative. Surprisingly, they always find reasons to criticize performance, even when the squad has performed admirably. Who would want to work with such a person?

Managing extra work

A dissatisfied person sees nothing positive in their coworkers, employers, clients, or even themselves. They only talk about the terrible aspects of life. Surprisingly, even when the group has played wonderfully, they always find a way to trash it. Who wants to work with someone like that?
