Health benefits from sugarcane consumption

Sugarcane health benefits

Due to the presence of sodium bicarbonate, tooth decay and oral health problems are common in central, eastern and coastal areas of Kenya, as well as parts of the Rift Valley such as Nakuru and around southern Nyanza.

Oral health problems also affect people in areas high in sodium chloride and among people who do not observe oral hygiene.

The 2015 Kenya National Oral Survey (KNOS), the only such survey to date, found that three out of four teenagers suffer from perforated bleeding, with a prevalence of more than 99 percent in five-year-olds. Perforation affects almost every adult, with more than 98 percent of responders having some sort of perforation.

Studies have shown that children and adults need caries and caries treatment, and most of the Kenyan population still drinks water with a higher fluoride content than usual.

Did you realize, however, that the foods you eat have an impact on your mouth health?

Dr. Steven , a molecular biologist, adds, “As soon as you eat particular foods, your tongue starts to alter.”

He added that oral bacteria convert sugar and carbohydrates from food into acid, which is the beginning of an attack on tooth enamel that triggers the caries phase. The condition worsens due to frequent consumption of snacks.

Cheese, chicken and other meats, nuts and milk are one of the best foods for healthy mouths and white teeth because they provide the calcium and phosphorus needed for tooth remineralization.

Minerals are redeposited in the tooth enamel after being removed by acids in a natural process known as remineralization.
Dr. Sphene recommends eating apples, pears, and vegetables, which have a high water content and thus help to avoid tooth decay. In addition to boosting saliva production, which washes away food particles and buffers acids, water dilutes the effects of carbohydrates.

Saliva flow is increased by chewing sugarless gum, however acidic items like citrus fruits, tomatoes, and lemons should be taken as part of a bigger meal to limit acidity.

“Avoid drinking sodas all day while watching movies or football games because this exposes your teeth to constant sugar and, as a result, constant decay-causing acids,” Dr. Sphene says.

Sugarcane is another great meal because it boosts saliva production, which helps to buffer or neutralize oral acids.

Sugarcane does, in fact, contain natural sugar, and the liquid found in sugarcane aids in tooth cleaning and freshness.
